Kereru or (kukupa, kuku or native wood pigeon) is New Zealand’s only endemic pigeon. Kereru is also the only surviving bird since the Moa and Huia capable of ingesting the large fruit and berries and dispersing seeds of the native trees and shrubs of New Zealand such as Miro, Tawa, Karaka, Puriri and Taraire, too large to be dispersed by other birds.
Kereru breed very slowly. Studies show that fewer than 15 per cent of chicks survive long enough to become independent. If this decline continues the species will not be able to sustain itself - their conservation is important because they play a key ecological role in the regeneration of native forest. Love Us Don't Hunt Us! The pigeons in this set measure 20cm, 15cm, and 11cm in length (from beak to tip of tail).
